STORY: What Is It? Can We Do Better?
(A Rebroadcast of Our November LIVE Webinar on STORY with NEW Content Added)
EP. 42) We’ve added all new content before and after this recording of our LIVE WEBINAR on STORY (from November 2024). Emily and Jon Meyers explore the elements of Story and how to make your storytelling more effective.
Members of our community who appear on screen are Sierra, Bethany Hale, Lori Twichell, and our tech expert David Corbly. Contributing offscreen are Bob Saenz, Emily Tucker Rhinelander, and Dallin.
OUR HOSTS GET OUT OF THEIR BUBBLE
Emily talks about the abundance of babies at her church.
Jon Meyers details the painful haircut he received.
NOTE: Jon Meyers forgot to make this point, which was the whole purpose of telling the story: The resulting haircut looks the same as always – but unlike the 35 previous haircuts, the process was much more difficult.
Takeaway applicable to your writing: Even when the going gets rough, even when the process hurts, the result can still be acceptable – even admirable. So when you’re having a difficult writing session, don’t give up – the results can still be pleasing.
LISTENER RESPONSES
Emily Tucker Rhinelander declares she is a writer.
CALL TO ACTION
Write a 100-word Story with a Protagonist, Goal, and Obstacles.
Ideally, include some trial and error.
Also, ideally, find a way to include the genre in the first sentence.
Post on our facebook, or reply on YouTube or to this email.
HEY JON MEYERS
Emily explains leap year and calendars to Jon Meyers (and herself).
THE FINAL ACT: WHICH LAMP WON’T LIGHT?
Emily plays a guessing game with Jon Meyers’s face as the only clue.
